How this is calculated

Complaint counts are queried live from NYC’s 311 Service Requests dataset (erm2-nwe9) via the Socrata SODA API, filtered to complaint types containing “Noise” over the last 12 months.

Raw counts are normalized to complaints per 100,000 residents using 2025 U.S. Census Bureau population estimates, so boroughs of different sizes can be compared fairly. The loudest borough is the one with the highest per-capita rate.

Population figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program, Vintage 2025 (July 1, 2025 estimates), via NYC Department of City Planning: Bronx 1,406,332 · Brooklyn 2,653,963 · Manhattan 1,664,862 · Queens 2,358,182 · Staten Island 501,290.

Reflects reported complaints, not confirmed violations.
